TIC i Gènere

Ada

Gender and the Information Revolution in Africa

Gender & ICT Awards

GKP and APC WNSP

The Gender and ICT Awards, initiated in 2003, recognise ICT initiatives which promote women's economic empowerment and gender equality, especially projects initiated by women themselves. The awards honour local, small-scale and community-based projects with women and girls as the main beneficiaries to improve the quality of their lives and to make meaningful contributions to equitable human development and the broader struggle for social justice.

The awards recognise sustainable projects that have the potential and ease to be replicated in other areas, taking into account the different contexts and forces at play. They should also foster multi-stakeholder cooperation and active participation among different sectors in the community.

Nominees are required to reflect on and express understanding and strategic analysis on the methods and tools they used, and of their own failures and ultimate success in such a way that others can learn from their experiences

Top 5 Myths About Girls, Math and Science

By LiveScience Staff

The days of sexist science teachers and Barbies chirping that "math class is tough!" are over, according to pop culture, but a government program aimed at bringing more women and girls into science, technology, engineering and math fields suggests otherwise.
Below are five myths about girls and science that still endure, according to the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE) program:

Myth 1: From the time they start school, most girls are less interested in science than boys are.
Myth 2: Classroom interventions that work to increase girls' interest in STEM run the risk of turning off the boys
Myth 3: Science and math teachers are no longer biased toward their male students.
Myth 4: When girls just aren't interested in science, parents can't do much to motivate them.
Myth 5: At the college level, changing the STEM curriculum runs the risk of watering down important "sink or swim" coursework.

Using Games to Promote Girls' Positive Attitudes Toward Technology

Innovate. Journal of online education.

Studies show that women make up only 35% of the IT workforce, and the schism between boys' and girls' interests in math and science is well documented. Richard Van Eck suggests that providing girls with more positive experiences with technology may impact their overall attitudes toward technology and perhaps even toward math and science. Van Eck chose games, naturally engaging experiences, as the basis of a two-semester study involving 92 fifth- and sixth-graders participating in game playing and authoring experiences in the classroom. He analyzes the differences in experience, attitude, and interest level between boys and girls. His results suggest that the use of a wide variety of games experienced in mixed gender groups may improve girls' attitudes toward technology.

Canasta Básica de Género y TICs

Bridge

Lessons I’ve Learned in 22 Years of Working with Teachers About Girls in IT

Jo Sanders

When I started doing computer equity work in the early- to mid-80’s, the typical reaction from teachers and administrators who had computers for student use was that there was no problem because there was no computer gender gap. In visiting schools, it quickly became apparent to me that educators
simply didn’t notice it. I remember touring a middle school in the Midwest with a principal who was proud to show me around his beautiful new building, built with clusters of two or three computers in various places. The first cluster we came to was unoccupied. The second had one boy. The third had two boys. The fourth had three boys. Finally, we saw a girl and two empty computers at a fifth cluster. The principal turned to me and said, “Well, I’ll be damned. I had no idea!”.

I came to expect the “Well, I’ll be damned” realization. Unfortunately, it was usually followed by the observation that boys’ preponderance of computer
use didn’t matter, because boys were “naturally” more interested in computers than girls. So we were back to “no problem.”

Technical Education, Training, and Women's Participation in the ICT Sector

World Bank

Females have less access to skills training and development that would enable them to gain employment in the ICT sector. When females are employed, they generally work at lower levels, with less pay.

These initial disadvantages prevent girls and women from benefiting equally from the opportunities offered by the new technologies. Paradoxically, these same technologies offer opportunities for them to overcome these disadvantages by obtaining the education and the technical skills that will enable them to participate equally in the knowledge economy.
